How to Space Wall Decals for a Balanced, Stylish Look

If you've ever stared at a blank wall wondering how far apart your wall decals should go, you're not alone. One of the most common questions we get is: "How do I space wall decals evenly?" Whether you're using one of our pattern decal packs or larger statement decals, we're here to help you figure out placement, spacing, and how to get the exact look you're dreaming of.

Why Wall Decal Spacing Matters

Wall decals give you full creative freedom—unlike wallpaper or murals, which fill the entire wall by default. With decals, you get to decide whether you want a minimalist, scattered look or a full, mural-style effect. The secret to making any decal arrangement look intentional? Proper spacing.

General Guidelines for Decal Spacing

When in doubt, follow the 8–12 inch rule. That’s about 8 to 12 inches between decals both side-to-side and top-to-bottom. This rule works great for:

  • Small-to-medium pattern decals (like triangles, dots, or hearts)
  • Standard 8–10 foot walls
  • Designs where you want a balanced, airy aesthetic

Use a pencil, level, and ruler (or a pre-cut template from cardboard or cardstock) to help maintain consistency.

Option A: Eyeball It (Great for Irregular Dot Decals)

If you're working with irregular dots, there are no rules. This style thrives on organic placement, and the beauty is in the imperfection. You can:

  • Use as few as one pack for a scattered, minimal look
  • Layer up to 10 packs for a more dramatic, wallpaper-like effect
  • Step back often to ensure balance as you install

The black dots are unevenly shaped and spaced closely together, giving the wall a dynamic, textured appearance. The floor is beige tile, and the space is well-lit with a clean, minimalist feel.

Pro Tip:

Avoid placing decals behind large furniture pieces like beds or dressers—this saves product and keeps your design visible.

Option B: Use a Formula for Pattern Decals

Let’s say you’ve purchased a pack of triangles (50 per pack) and your wall is 11 feet wide x 9 feet tall. Here’s how to calculate spacing for a mural-style layout:

Step 1: Convert wall dimensions to inches

  • Width: 11 ft = 132 inches
  • Height: 9 ft = 108 inches

Step 2: Determine desired decal spacing

Let’s say you want 10 inches between decals horizontally and vertically.

  • Horizontal placements: 132 inches / (approx. 10 inches spacing) = ~13 decals per row
  • Vertical placements: 108 inches / (approx. 10 inches spacing) = ~10 rows
  • Total needed: 13 x 10 = 130 decals

Step 3: Decide how many packs you need

If each pack contains 50 decals:

  • 130 decals / 50 per pack = 2.6 → round up to 3 packs

Want a More Minimal Look?

Increase the spacing (12–16 inches), and use fewer decals. You might only need 1 or 2 packs, depending on the coverage you want.

Option C: Clustered or Bouquets (Great for Florals)

Large decals like our floral designs look amazing when clustered into bouquets or grouped intentionally. Here's how:

  • Mix and match sizes to create visual interest
  • Use odd numbers (3, 5, 7) in each cluster for a more natural feel
  • Try corners, over cribs, around mirrors, or framing headboards

Matching the Look to Your Budget

If you're decorating on a tighter budget, you can absolutely stretch your decal packs further by spacing them wider apart. It gives you wall coverage without feeling too empty.

If you want a full mural look (especially with triangles, arches, or abstract shapes), you’ll need multiple packs and a consistent spacing pattern—just like the formula above.

Final Thoughts: There’s No One Right Way

Ultimately, the best part about wall decals is that you’re the designer. Whether you love symmetry or a more organic vibe, your space should reflect your personal style.
